CHAPTER 6
Heâd called her Harry - again.
Harriet packed the fuzzy bundles of mohair wool into a basket, resisting the urge to shove them in any old how.
Sheâd thought she and Coop were making progress, and then he had to ruin it all â by calling her by the nickname she detested.
She couldnât help it if she had an old-fashioned name. All three sisters had been named after female relatives: Tess and Harriet after their grandmothers, and Grace after their great-aunt, from whom theyâd inherited the ranch.
Things were going so well last night. Heâd been a perfect gentleman, driving them to the wine bar and hanging around town until they were ready to go home â sheâd assumed heâd head back to the ranch, and when they called him, heâd come to pick them up.
And when they returned home, sheâd been sure he was about to kiss her â there had been a tender look in his eye â but all heâd said â after heâd touched her hair â was, âGood night, Harry.â
She slammed the basket lid into place. Harriet had been pleased with the way sheâd looked last night â wearing a dress that seemed to accentuate her curves in a flattering way, her newly washed hair falling around her shoulders. And sheâd worn kitten heels again.
She hadnât looked like a tomboy at all.
Not that sheâd done it for Coopâs benefit.
No, sheâd done it for herself. But she couldnât deny the flutter of pleasure sheâd received when sheâd walked out of the house, ready to go, and noticed his reaction.
There was no way heâd thought of her as a tomboy in that moment.
She sighed. So why did have to be so annoying at the end of the evening?
Grabbing her car keys, she carried the basket out to the car. Today was the local farmersâ market that sheâd helped establish last year, and this was the first time she actually had something to sell â the wool from their angoras.
Harriet and her sisters had bought a wether each six months ago. Sheâd collected the wool, bundled it up unprocessed, and was finally ready to sell it.
Last year, Tess had gone to a seminar about making a living on a ranch, and the topic of angoras had been covered. Theyâd decided to go into the mohair wool business as a hobby first, and see if they liked it. And if they did, theyâd buy more goats and turn it into a part-time business.
Harriet started the engine and drove to the main road. She hadnât seen Coop today â thank goodness. In fact, she didnât want to see him ever again.
Her gaze flickered to the basket beside her. At least the farmersâ market would help her take her mind off things â one thing â him. All week, sheâd told herself not to get carried away with her expectations about today.
From her research, she knew unprocessed mohair sold for three dollars per pound. And she had seven pounds to sell. It was
